Assumption vs Merrimack Softball Game Recap

(Worcester, MA) — The Assumption College softball team hosted the Merrimack Warriors on Marois Field Thursday. This NE-10 Conference match up was a hard-fought battle by both sides. Both the Hounds and the Warriors displayed an impressive amount of hitting while still providing some great defensive plays.

Although it wasn’t ideal weather for the players or fans, both teams competed at a high level. The Merrimack Warriors ultimately defeated the Hounds 12-8.

This conference game against Merrimack was entertaining from start to finish. Merrimack began their scoring in the top of the second inning. Nicole Nanof hit a double to center field that advanced Kelly Dovi to second. Kristina Terrazzano followed with a two RBI double giving the Warriors an early 2-0 lead heading into the third.

In the bottom of the third inning is when the Hounds began their comeback. Senior Julia Mazzeo got things started for the Hounds with a double to right field. Alyssa Beaton contributed to the offense of the Hounds by hitting a double of her own bringing two runners home.

Kayla Peabody hit an RBI single bringing Drakoulakos home, and Assumption took the lead 3-2 heading into the fourth.

The Warriors began the fourth inning with good offensive play. Capitalizing on a bases loaded situation, Bryana Michitson walked which brought Dovi home. Tiffany Mangiameli then walked bringing home another run for the Warriors tying the game at 4-4.

The Hounds did damage at the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Earning three runs this inning by the efforts of Drakoulakos who hit a RBI single and Peabody who  then crushed a two-run homer that gave the Hounds ahead 7-4.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Warriors added to their score when Mangiameli hit a RBI single. Abby Amato earned herself a RBI that cut the deficit to one, the score is now 7-6.

The Hounds answered back when Murphy hits a double. Beaton matched Murphy by hitting another double that brought Murphy home and extended the Hounds lead 8-6.

At the top of the seventh inning, Terrezzano got things going for the Warriors by hitting a RBI single. This cut the lead to one, the Warriors trailed the Hounds 8-7. Wike then tied the score up 8-8 with a single up the middle to score Nicole Nanof.

The Hounds were unable to score another run for the duration of the game. The Warriors sealed their victory with the help of Caitlin McBride’s hitting. McBride hit a big time RBI single and Colarusso hits a single of her own to score another run for the Warriors who are up 10-8 at this point.

After a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt, the Warriors closed out the game with a four point win beating the Hounds 12-8.

The Hounds played a good game for the most part; they just couldn’t earn any runs at the tail end of the game. The Warriors had timely hits down the stretch that the Hounds weren’t able to overcome.

The Assumption softball team remains above .500 for the season with 18-12 overall record and a NE-10 Conference record of 11-6. The Hounds will travel to Southern N.H. on Friday, April 12 looking to bounce back from this loss.
